About Blake's Busy Blankets

I can't begin to tell you how nervous I am to write about this very special project.  What if I screw up?  What if I use the wrong term, and someone's feelings get hurt?  What if I say too much about my friend's personal life?  Well, with that in mind... here goes...

I first met Kristen and Matt in a CrossFit gym in 2010, when they moved to Okinawa, Japan.  I was active duty Air Force at the time, and I remember after the first few work outs together, I went up to them and said something to the effect of "We're friends now, you guys are coming over this weekend".  Just like that - they were!  I'm over simplifying a bit, but let's be real, you're not here to read about Kristen and my adventures searching for the elusive "bottom of the wine bottle".

Fast forward a few years, and viola - Kristen is pregnant!  If you don't know how that happens, I suggest asking your mom.  Kristen had a pretty uneventful pregnancy... and by uneventful I mean she kicked @$$ and was one of those mom's who's baby rested piecefully in her belly under a solid six pack - you go girl!  When it was time for Baby Blake's arrival I had already moved away from Okinawa and was living in southern Virginia.

Blake's arrival was anything but uneventful.  The first year of Blake's life included a medivac via military airlift to Hawaii to undergo his first of many surgeries.  It was during this time that we found out Blake brought with him an extra chromosome, and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.  Blake will turn two in March 2016, and is totally crushing it at being awesome.  He playes a killer frying pan drum gig on Friday nights, has a strong instagram following, and enjoys chewing on his shoe laces - which brings us to the busy blanket.

After talking to Kristen, she explained to me that Blake is teething and chewing on everything and said to me "If you could get me something made entirely out of shoe laces that would be amazing!" so I got to thinking.  Amongst teething, Blake is also at the perfect age to start learing about zippers, snaps and buttons so I wanted to create something that he could chew on, while learning - and voila - Blake's Busy Blanket!

For every Blake's Busy Blanket sold, Pearls N Cotton will donate $5 to Reece's Rainbow, a Down Syndrome Adoption Grant Foundation.  I challenge you to take a look at their website without shedding a tear - their mission is absolutely amazing and I am so excited to do my little part in supporting it!
